SUMMARY:Abraham Gesner the Lure of the Rocks and a Burning Ambition-- book launch
DESCRIPTION:The debt and bad management that drove Abraham Gesner off his farm in Chipman Corner in 1825\, became a stroke of luck and innovation. After leaving Kings County\, he spent two years doing medical courses in London hospitals.  In the great metropolis\, he encountered the industrial revolution.  Attending various lectures and demonstrations\, he got his first whiff of the rapidly developing new sciences of chemistry\, geology and natural history.  When he later returned to Nova Scotia\, he imitated procedures which he had observed while abroad and experimented with “cracking” coal to generate the tars\, oils and gases which fueled the industrial revolution.  In the process\, he produced “kerosene” – an illuminating gas and an oil – which revolutionized artificial lighting and generated much industry.  \n Author and retired professor\, Elizabeth Haigh shares highlights from her book. Until 2006\, she taught History of Science at St. Mary’s University\, and was an adjunct professor of history at Dalhousie University in Halifax.

DESCRIPTION:History told by those who lived it \nBerwick author records oral history of Kings County \nBerwick author Linda Pineo will be visiting the Kings County Museum on July 6\, from 2 pm until 4 pm and sharing stories from her latest collection of local stories\, Digging Up Roots.   \nFor more than 20 years\, Pineo has been gathering the oral history of the Annapolis Valley. She talks to local people about their lives and records their stories in their own words. \nLike Pineo’s previous two books\, this new collection of Kings County stories are told by the people who lived the experience. Stories include personal accounts of the Kentville Sanatorium\, and tales about the North Mountain Railroad. \nHer previous books\, Caught In Time and Saving Lives\, cover a number of Kings County stories\, including the birth of the Western Kings Memorial Hospital\, a wartime shipwreck off Long Island\, and a varied assortment from the lives of the farming community\, including rural farm vacations. \nTo attend Linda’s July 6 book talk at the Kings County Museum\, or receive a zoom link\, email info@kingscountymuseum.ca\, or call 902-678-6237. \n  \nThe Kings County Museum will be following COVID-19 protocols at all events. \nPlease do not attend if you say yes to any of the following;\n1. You are feeling unwell\, or have symptoms of COVID-19\n2. You have been in contact with someone who is a probable case of COVID-19 or is feeling unwell.\n3. You have travelled outside the province of Nova Scotia in the past 14 days. \nAll those who attend will be required to social distance and to wear masks. \n
