SUMMARY:Nautical Rope Basket Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \nNautical rope knots have been used for centuries by mariners to secure sails and rigging on ships and boats.  Variations or repetitions of certain knots can create a variety of functional and decorative items\, such as mats that protect decks from the rigging\, to surround railings or to stand on for cushioning.  \n  \nPresenter\, Karen Morley\, resides in Cottage Cove where she makes items from “repurposed” lobster rope and sells them at local markets. She mostly uses reclaimed lobster fishing rope keeping it out of landfills and off the shore near her home.  \n  \nParticipants will learn how to first create a nautical thump mat which will then be turned into a bowl. This useful bowl\, approximately 20 – 25 cm in diameter\, can hold fruit\, bread or any items you wish.  All materials will be provided including a choice between 2 colours of reclaimed lobster fishing rope and written instructions \nRegister; info@kingscountymuseum.ca  confirm you spot by e-transfer to info@kingscountymuseum.ca with “basket workshop” in the message

SUMMARY:Not Just Apples: Survival Strategies of Annapolis Valley Farmers Before World War II
DESCRIPTION:”Not Just Apples: Survival Strategies of Annapolis Valley Farmers Before World War II”\, presented by James Murton of Nipissing University\, looks at how Annapolis Valley families made a living before the Second World War. Although the region became famous for its apple industry\, most farmers relied on much more than orchards alone\, combining apple growing with livestock\, field crops\, gardens\, and food production for their own households. Using diaries\, oral histories\, and historical records\, this talk explores the everyday realities of rural life and the many strategies families used to adapt\, survive\, and support themselves
