SUMMARY:SIGHTINGS\, Exploring the Scope of the Canadian Sniper
DESCRIPTION:The West Nova Scout-Sniper Platoon\nH. Col. John Leefe\, West NS Regt\nItaly 1944: the Allies had successfully driven the Italian and German forces out of Sicily and invaded the Italian mainland. The First Canadian Division was now part of the famous British 8th Army. Canadians\, British and other Commonwealth forces were responsible for driving a deeply entrenched\, tough adversary out of a tremendously demanding terrain consisting of mountains\, cold cascading streams\, deep valleys and plains always coping with the summer heat of the Mediterranean and the constant wet\, cold\, mud\, ice and snow of late autumn through to late spring. In the vanguard was the 3rd Canadian Infantry Brigade comprised of R22eR (Vingt-Deuxs) from Quebec\, the Carleton and York Regiment from New Brunswick and our own West Nova Scotia Regiment. Before their job was done in Italy and Northwest Europe\, they would be in the thick of fighting for 22 months. Read more… \n  \nThis from the May 2016 Regimental Association Newsletter

SUMMARY:Witchcraft! with Clary Croft
DESCRIPTION:The Kings Historical Society presents  an evening  with famed folklorist\, writer  and entertainer CLARY CROFT exploring Witchcraft! The subject evokes curiosity\, fascination\, and sometimes\, abhorrence. In the Maritimes\, a region with a rich tradition of storytelling\, accounts of witchcraft are abundant. Folklorist CLARY CROFT will  explore some of  the many examples of witchcraft identified in the Maritimes and explain their cultural origins-Scottish\, Mi’kmaq\, Acadian\, German\, among others. He will offer examples of spells\, charms\, and superstitions involving everything from animal horns and blood to salt and milk. Croft will also trace witchcraft’s more official history from the Maritimes’ first witch trial in 1684 to the the trial of Jean Campagna-followed by others throughout the eighteenth\, nineteenth\, and twentieth centuries.CROFT’S book Witchcraft is a thoroughly researched history of an often-misunderstood practice and a rich source of Maritime folklore. \nFor a review of  one of Clary’s past presentations on this topic click here . \nA limited number of Witchcraft books will be available and a book signing will follow the talk. \nThere will be a freewill offering in support of the Kings Historical Society.
